In this chapter, Glasser discusses how there needs to be a new approach in schools to get students to work harder. Some key points that are given in this chapter are:
  • It is impossible for teachers to teach to students who do not want to learn.
  • Underachieved schools having been going on since WWII.
  • It was said that students should stay longer in school, have harder classes and more homework.
  • Parents are taking their children out of public schools and putting them in private schools.
  • They are losing family-motivated students, which is there most important factor.
  • We are losing people to higher-paid jobs because they require an education.
  • Students turn to drugs and other bad choices due to the low income job problem.
  • There are two school systems - teacher and student/ student drop out and teacher
  • The second system is more expensive because schools could be saving money instead of spending in on crime and drugs related to students.
  • There are teachers who like to take on challenging students, but success can only be maintained if it is in small classes.
  • Some teachers leave because they feel discouraged.
  • Students no longer want to help each other due to competition with other students.
  • Control Theory- what a human needs to be satisfied.
  • Some students don't work because their is no immediate payoff.
